“Wild Child,” featuring the final screen performance of the late Natasha Richardson, is being dumped straight to DVD in North America by Universal on Sept. 22, a year after it flopped in UK theaters.

The Anglo-American production from Working Title stars Emma Roberts as the spoiled daughter of Aidan Quinn (right, with Natasha) who ships his offspring off to a British boarding school where Richardson is headmistress.

Universal, which is drowning in flops and underperformers so far this year, recently offloaded another Working Title UK flop, “The Boat That Rocked” on its specialty label Focus after pulling the plug on a planned Aug. 28 wide release.

Too bad the word “dumped” is used. Probably film industry jergon, but it is glaringly unfitting.

At least we’ll be able to see it here in the U.S. soon. Though it’s not great that it flopped, I appreciate the news.

What a poor choice of words! I am only guessing that it will now become one of the most requested DVDs other than perhaps a Michael Jackson tribute DVD!

I’ve been waiting for this film to come out, and could find nothing about it!

Does anyone think that perhaps the family just couldn’t face it coming out and made a deal?

Actually, it didn’t flop in England or Australia. The movie didn’t cost that much too make, and it grossed $21.5 million in those two countries. That’s pretty decent. Who knows how it would have done in American theatres? The studio just wasn’t willing to take a chance and release it here, because they’d have to spend a lot on advertising and Emma Roberts last movie bombed here big time. Their decision has nothing to do with Natasha, though, and that article shouldn’t have made it seem as if it did.
