An ad featuring a photograph of Natasha Richardson as part of a push to sell ski helmets has been banned by a British advertising watchdog.

The newsletter-type email featured a picture of Richardson and the words: “We regret to inform you that British actress Natasha Richardson has died in hospital this morning, after suffering a head injury in a skiing accident in Mont Tremblant, Canada.”

It added, “We strongly recommend the wearing of ski helmets by children and adults.”

The U.K.’s Advertising Standards Authority ruled the email found at skiwear4less.com was not appropriate and “likely to cause serious offence” to some recipients.

The Ski & Outdoor Warehouse argued the email was part of a newsletter, not an ad. Two recipients of the email filed complaints to the advertising watchdog.

Wow, what a hard call here . On the one hand you have the grieving family to think of and then ……in some strange way i cant help but to think Natasha would be all for saving lifes.
Quite often and sadly it takes a tragedy to get through to people the importance of common sense issues.
I would hope they had the family permission.

Existing helmets do not prevent serious injury. They were trying to use Natasha.

The ad suggests that Natasha was to blame for her own death. On the contrary, Natasha was a very clever, aware person, and she could have never done anything that would cause harm to herself. The helmet issue should not even be associated with her. One should, instead, lobby for the creation of effective helmets.

Let’s work together so that people are stopped from blaming her. We must preserve her memory, so that we can allow future gemerations to learn from her, as we have all learned.

Speaking personally, I have learned to stand by those whom I love, from Natasha’s example. I have, in fact, learned so much from her, that I cannot elaborate on all of it in this brief message.

I’ve been finding it very difficult to believe that she was offered a helmet, or, indeed, that she actually intended to ski down a slope, bunny or otherwise. She wasn’t one to take risks; she even stopped smoking after struggling with it for years.

I agree with Marianne Dryden, and have been doing what I can over on Natasha’s IMDb board to make it clear that the blame for her death should be placed squarely on the shoulders of a health care system (Quebec Province’s speciaifcally, not Canada’s) that’s too cheap to buy an emergency helicopter for a region where serious accidents can happen, and which insists on a ridiculous protocol which requires patients to be taken to the nearest hospital EVEN IF THAT HOSPITAL LACKS THE FACILITIES to treat them. Natasha was first taken to such a hospital, and then had to be taken to another hospital in Montreal, by which time it was too late to save her.

Sorry to go on a rant, but I’m still having a very tough time getting over this.

I agree with both of you.I hope one day we all will be privy to the specifics of the fall.

Sean ,

I agree with you about wanting to know the details of the fall.

We know that Liam will do the best for the family, in regard to how much he delves into all this, if he chooses to, or how much he wants to reveal.

For the present, he has such a heavy burden of grief, and a lot of unexpected responsibility.

I saw a picture that was taken of him at the recent honorary degree ceremony. The grief revealed in that photo would touch anyone’s heart.

Aidan Quinn, his close friend, recently said that there is no timetable for the feelings following such a great loss.
Shock, denial, loss, sadness, anger, can set in at any time.

This is, of course, true for the whole family. For this and other reasons, their feelings should not be closely examined by outsiders. They need support, but also a great deal of privacy.

Obviously, they also need to be spared the suggestion that Natasha is to blame. Of course, they know that she is not to blame. I can imagine that one of their greatest sorrows is that the woman they love so much, was hurt, and that they could not comfort her or save her.

It is likely beyond their comprehension that those who were present at the accident scene did not act more sensitively to save her.

This is also beyond my own comprehension.

The loss suffered by all is profound.

I can’t believe this!

I’m from the UK and am shocked at this news! What offence can be caused by this? I’m sure that Liam, Vanessa and the rest of Natasha’s family would be pleased that she may save the lives of others. I’m sure if it was Nicole Kidman or Johnny Depp that nobody would complain.

Natasha seemed like a very compassionate person and I’m sure that she would be upset at being prevented from helping others.

I would love to get this overturned!

A helmet compay was using Natasha’s picture to sell helmets.

Selling helmets that do not protect serious injury, will not sell lives.

Support, I suggest, cold better be given, to develop useful, protectived helmets. Consider also contributing to aids research.

We are grieving for Natasha, not supporting money-making pursuits.
